Started:Nov 2023
Duration:60 days
Completed:Jan 2024

The Challenge

LearnBright developed an innovative adaptive learning platform showing 40% improvement in student outcomes. Teachers loved it. But scaling beyond individual classroom pilots required district-level contracts-and districts required FERPA compliance.

The 35-person startup had no legal or compliance expertise. FERPA requirements seemed vague and district-specific, with each RFP asking slightly different questions. They'd lost 8 district opportunities simply by being unable to answer compliance questionnaires confidently.

Complicating matters, different states had additional student privacy laws (SOPIPA in California, COPPA for under-13s, etc.), creating a patchwork of requirements.

Our Approach

1

Compliance Mapping

Week 1-2

Analyzed FERPA, COPPA, and state-specific requirements. Created unified compliance framework covering 15 target states.

2

Technical Controls

Week 2-5

Implemented data classification, encryption, access controls tied to school roles, and audit logging for all student data access.

3

Documentation & Agreements

Week 5-7

Created privacy policy, parent notification templates, data processing agreements, and district-ready compliance documentation.

4

Parent Portal & Transparency

Week 7-9

Built parent dashboard showing data collected, purpose, and deletion rights. Implemented consent management for optional features.
